Many people used to believe that the way lipstick was made was the same as the way it was applied. I, even, didn’t know that it could be a toxic product, and I certainly had no idea what my lipstick should be made of.
The truth is, there are many different ways for lipstick to be manufactured and applied. Some lipsticks are vegan, some are not. Some lipsticks are organic, and some are not. There is also a difference in quality depending on whether or not you’re buying an expensive brand or an inexpensive one.
I wanted to find a lipstick that is safe and gives a quality that is very much every penny-worth. So I started looking into clean beauty products, which is the term used for products made without any toxic chemicals or ingredients.
What is clean beauty?
Many people are now looking for clean beauty products because they are concerned about their health and the environment. Clean beauty is a new trend that has been growing in popularity in the last few years.
Clean beauty products don’t use toxins and harsh chemicals, but instead use natural ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and jojoba oil. These ingredients are all-natural and can be found at your local grocery store or even at your own kitchen.
Some clean beauty companies are using natural ingredients like plant oils, fruit extracts, waxes and butters to create their lipsticks instead of lead. These lipsticks are made with only high quality ingredients so you know they won’t harm your body or the environment.
How to know if it’s a Non Toxic Lipstick?
There are a few things to consider when looking for a non-toxic lipstick:
- Ingredients List
The first is the ingredients list. You want to avoid parabens, synthetic dyes and fragrances, and petrolatum. Animal products and by-products are also something to watch out for, as are heavy metals.
Some people are allergic to some animal products and their by-products. If you have not still discovered your allergies and afraid of suffering the consequences, better stay away from products which includes these ingredients:
- Tallow / Fatty Acids
- Glycerine / Glycerin / Glycerol
- Lanolin
- Carmine / Cochineal
- Guanine
- Squalene / Squalane
- Collagen
- Choose a Mineral-based Lipstick
One option is to go with a mineral-based lipstick. These tend to use natural ingredients like mica and titanium dioxide. They often come in a wider range of colors than traditional lipsticks, and they can also offer some sun protection.
- Switch to Organic Lipstick
Another option is to choose a lipstick that’s certified organic. These will have ingredients like jojoba oil and beeswax, which are gentle and non-toxic. However, they may not be as long-lasting as other lipsticks.
- Stay Away From Toxic Chemicals
Lipsticks are a cosmetic product that is applied to the lips for color, texture, and protection from the sun. Since the first lipstick was created, manufacturers have been using a variety of chemicals to make this product. Some of these chemicals are known as toxic and can cause serious health problems such as organ damage, cancer, or birth defects.
The following is a list of some toxic chemicals typically found in lipstick:
- lead acetate
- lead nitrate
- mercury chloride
- bismuth oxychloride
Whichever option you choose, it’s important to read the labels and do your research to make sure you’re getting a product that’s safe for you.
